The Good, the Bad and the Ugly? Whose Who

April16

A certain 46, going on 60, year old shocked the nation on Saturday night when the small and rather chubby lonely cat lover from Wales stood on stage in Britain’s Got Talent.

The gold lace dress made her look like a piece of pork sitting on a doily and Ant and Dec were quick to jump on what seemed was a joke. Interviewed by the presenting brothers before she went on stage, she told them she was unemployed, single, living home alone with a cat and never been kissed. As Susan took to the stage, she was met by giggles, chatter and an unpleasant array of wolf whistles.

So the question remains, whose who? Is Susan Boyle the ugly one, or are we? Why was the nation so shocked when an ugly woman appeared on stage to perform an act of such magnitude? In the current day of the media shaped perfection, does a woman have to be the bright, empty beauty of a toy in order to be accepted on the screen?

Before Susan shocked the nation, her ages was questioned. Her response “I’m nearly 47,” was met by yet more giggles and wolf whistles. Later adding “But that’s only one side of me”, Simon and the panel were not the only one giving looks of disgust, the audience’s reaction was equally disgusting.

Then there was silence, as the crowd gasped in amassment. Equally were the judges, they gasped and clapped – looking almost ashamed! When Susan had finished singing, and Piers had finished gasping, he said this. It was a comment of incredible spite. “When you stood there with that cheeky grin and said, ‘I want to be like Elaine Paige’, everyone was laughing at you. No one is laughing now.” And it was over to Amanda Holden, a woman most notable for playing a psychotic hairdresser in the Manchester hair-extensions saga Cutting It. “I am so thrilled,” said Amanda, “because I know that everybody was against you.” “Everybody was against you,” she said, as if Susan might have been hanged for her presumption. Why? Can’t “ugly” people dream, you flat-packed, hair-ironed, over-plucked monstrous fool?

So there you have it, a fairy tale night for one Susan Boyle, one that could quite easily of gone the other way. For the sake of the pure ugliness shown to Susan that night, I hope she will win Britain’s Got Talent. She might not be the next British rendition of Britney Spears but my god has she got talent.
